What is SafetyCase?
SafetyCase is a portable telecom emergency device that is used to communicate immediately in an emergency situation when no other network or other power source is available.
This product has been firstly invented and prototyped by Gregory Roger at Orange Innovation, who later looked for designers to define the user experience and the product aesthetics.

My contribution
For this product I worked on the user experience with a life-cycle approach: what happens before, during and after use? What are the main difficulties users can experience during an emergency?
I started with a research phase on emotions during crisis and chose to focus on the 3 main emotions that can be experienced during a difficult time: fear, anger and sadness.
After a deep analysis of these emotions, with their physical signs and behaviors associated, I developed the concept of “emotional accessibility”: how could anyone experiencing strong anger, deep sadness and paralyzing fear manage to use SafetyCase?

From this deep analysis, I came out with a quite unusual user manual where all information is chopped and contextualized to reduce cognitive load at minimum, all signs are multiplied for each step (color + text + image) in order to minimise errors and improve accessibility.
I draw myself all technical illustrations and wrote all texts in FALC (Facile à lire et à comprendre), which is a French “easy to read and understand” writing technique useful for autism and other neurodivergent needs.

I also worked with my colleagues Alain Mace and Anne Ripaud to write general recommendations about the user experience in order to ensure a responsible and effective use of the product throughout the whole life cycle.
